We believe that every child should have to opportunity to live in safe and healthy conditions regardless of their location. In Africa, out of all the dangerous diseases, malaria has been particularly causing severe damages among children. According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), malaria is widespread in 100 countries and territories worldwide, largely in the less developed tropical areas of Africa. Malaria kills one child every 30 seconds, about 3000 children every day. It kills at least 1 million people every year in Africa alone, mostly children under five years of age. Of the 300 million to 500 million annual cases of malaria, 90 percent occur in sub-Saharan Africa. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports malaria is responsible for one in five deaths of African children under age 5 every year. The latest WHO data published in 2018 Malaria Deaths in Niger reached 17,919 or 10.15% of total deaths. The age-adjusted Death Rate is 49.56 per 100,000 of population ranks Niger #6 in the world. For the children who survive the disease, the aftermath could still be dramatic. The consequences of malaria infection in children include anemia, respiratory distress, and cerebral damage. The most common parasite in Africa and the East Africa region (P. falciparum) has also severe cerebral symptoms associated with it. The most effective means of preventing malaria is sleeping under a mosquito net, specifically, a long-lasting insecticide-treated net (LLIN). The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibers that make up the netting and is ‘slow released’ over a 4-5 year period. Therefore the ‘long lasting’ insecticide-treated nets provide two levels of protection. Childhood International with the help of the local non-profit MEOV (Movement Evangelic Oeuvre et Vie) has planned a free distribution of 100,000 mosquito nets to poor families who cannot afford to buy or replace one.
